Animationary

Its been a while and i am truly sorry, but i am back and ready to fulfill your eyes with wondrous things, and firstly just to ease everyone in i shall start with the pressing work that has been put apon me.

Well i am now in my third year of film school and for ever student this means dissertation time. I was stumped but now i am found, and i am founded with researching......... sound in animation.

Now this sounds like it could be too much fun and let me say that it is! i get to watch loads of pixar, disney, studio ghibli films all for the name of research!

To get to the point i have tonight been 'researching' disney's cinderella and might i say that not only does it remind me of my childhood but also that somethings would be far funnier and happier if:

Talking mice and birds with waistcoats and hats made fashion clothing!:

Didnt find that fun? sing along to it with a mouse voice, fun for you, your throat and who ever walks past your door.

Photogular!

Recently i have been delving in to the world of (amateur) photography. I recently purchased a digital SLR camera after having used a manual SLR for a few years. Im still learningthe basics but i have been putting myself in to different situations to test myself.

Childrens Party: For my Cousins birthday we went to a scout camp were they ran around a playground and tried rock climbing. I was completely surprised how hard it is to photograph children, they run around so much they never stop, so a lot of blurring photos happened...damn.

And i have been given the chance to take event photos for an illustration group called Technicolour Moon.

photographing the event was the most challenging thing i have done at the moment and i look forward to learning more and getting better!

Pogo

If you haven't heard of pogo where have you been? He has been thrust in to the musical limelight thanks to his incredible ear and mixing skills. What does he do you ask? well he takes films and makes them in to music using only sounds from the film itself. His latest work comprises of using Disney films which are both fantastic to listen to and also fun to watch:

The thing that makes his work different is that i feel that you could literally listen to this music without knowing that it has anything to do with the film, it could easily pop up on you iTunes and you wouldn't have even known it was Up.

Femme Fatales of Music

Remember the 90's where there were a number of sexy boy bands splashed across every smash hits mags and the tvs, well thank god those days are behind us as the females have come and taken over the music world of today,of course we need to pay homage to the original girl power movement,the Spice Girls, but lets stay focused on the present. I have started to notice that my iTunes has become a complete vag fest (excuse the phrase) but im not complaining! There has been a sudden explosion of strong female singers hitting our radios and a new modern feeling of girl power.

I am a hard core fan of Florence and the Machine and have been even before she became famous. She has a certain air about her, she is confident and beautiful but also dark with a sort of grotesque quirkyness. Although her lyrics consist of death and sometimes sacrifice, the accompanying music is uplifting and catchy that makes you just want to sing along.

I saw her in Brighton just before her first album was released and might i say how epic it was. She takes control of the stage and flings herself around as you can see from the photo. I find that i cant find the words to describe her and her music as i feel so strongly about both, in a good way of course but i suppose that can say this: I once had an answer phone message from my housemate and all it consisted of was a group of people shouting/singing along to Dog Days for me, it was one of the happiest mornings i've ever had.

Laura Marling, a name that nearly everyone knows but still isn't heard on radio...why not? Her first album (Alas I can Not Swim) was full of emotion from such a young singer, her voice so sweet and innocent and her lyrics full of hope and naivety. Marlings second album (I Speak Because i Can) well might i say that when i first heard Devils Spoke i was disheartened as it sounded more rugged and grown up in a sense. I finally bought the album and listened all the way through and felt that i had been wrong about my first impressions. As she gets older of course her songs are going to become more edgy as responsibility and general life starts hitting.

Now Lady GaGa is on a whole new level. She has brought pop back in to fashion and has brought what basically what art students love (anything weird and quirky) in to main stream society. Has no one realised that she is the Andy Warhol of our time?!

Football Mayhem

Ok so England are playing football in a world cup again, for some this is a fantastic

time for sporting, patriotism and drinking a lot. But for a small few the hubbub of football strikes fear and disruption to their lives as they know it. Myself being one of the few. I am not interested in football yet i am forced to have to rammed down my throat were ever i turn. Yes it is nice to be patriotic and i hope that we at least do well but i have the same feeling about the Eurovision song contest.

Its not that im anti-sport, i love the fact that it brings people together and when your sat in a pub with crowds of people cheering its a fun experience but i should still ever choose wether i want to be a part of it.

To rase my mood about the whole thing i have decided to watch some new films that i bought the other day.

1. Clerks directed by Kevin Smith - this film is a must see indie classic that follows two shop clerks throughout one day of their lives. Dante works in the convenience store where as Randal works next do

or in the video rent shop, both shops owned by the same boss. The film was a lot of interesting dialogue and witty remarks that you will recognise unknowing that this film was probably the

origin. This film is the kind of film that needs a second watch as there would definitely be more to see second time round, a good

watch.

2. Precious directed by Lee

Daniels - Ever since the advertisement of this film i had been eager to see it. The story follows Precious an illiterate 16 year old girl that is pregnant for the second time, by her dad. In my opinion the film was very well

constructed in showing and telling the horrific events that happen to this character. The audience are always with Precious seeing everything from her point of view, we even have a narration of her thoughts both past and present. Never once did i feel directly sorry for her in a patronising way, instead you accept what has happened and what is happening and feel a great deal of support for her. I dont actually want to give too much away as it is a fantastic film and feel that you should all go out, but it and watch it.

3. 12 Angry Men directed by Sidney Lumet - At this very moment i am actually watching this film and writing this so i can only write about what ive already (just) seen but stick with me. This is a classic vintage film that consists of only 12 men in a room trying to work out wether a boy is guilty of murder. The film is part murder mystery, part big brother like personality observation. Now the film is quite slow but stick with it as i feel that there will definitely be a twist at the end. Little pieces of information are highlighted by a swift close up of a certain character, which is funny to watch but also keep in mind this information it may lead to something! Well i suppose i must actually watch the rest before i give a proper review! sorry!

Anyway my night has been a proactive one as i have been able to watch three very different films from three very different era's AND forget about the football. Ignorance is bliss.

Perm

Perm.... the very word can strike fear in to peoples sense of style. Our throwback of the eighties in fashion has brought back leg warmers, bright neon colours, leggings and many other things so why should we stop there? why not let it go to our heads? (oh yes i just made a clever remark!)

So just a short and sweet post but heres me and my perm. Lets just be thankful that the mullet hasn't and will NEVER return!

Tattoo

Now recently i have been thinking about a tattoo but i can never seem to find a design that i would like to have needled into my skin.

For my birthday a fabulous lady called Maddy (A Fistfull of Peanuts) gave me these transfer tattoos! I was so happy when i saw them the last transfer tattoo i had was from a candy stick pack of spiderman, which made my week as there were sooooo many confused looks!

So while i can quickly and easily rub on/off these beauties i am in the process of designing a tattoo i like.

Vintage

In our time of the noughties we have been reliving the 80's and soon to be living (some parts...the better parts!) of the 90's in fashion. I love the fact that 80's fashion has come back today, with a slight twist of modernism of course , but i am always a sucker for vintage items. There's nothing i like better then clicking through the vintage section of ebay, sifting through charity shops or heading straight for the specialist shops. You may have to pay a little bit more but you get a whole lot more look for your money!

The other day the guardian had a little guide to vintage and antiques which informed me that the 90's fashion had started to reappear. I found this day dress which 1. is a good find for summer, a light little day dress and 2. its in a Hawaiian style, like the Hawaiian male shirts that were 'in' in the 90's........i want it.......i want it NOW!

PostSecret

The other day when i was to go and buy birthday presents i sort of got side tracked and bought stuff for myself (always happens).

I came across this book Postsecrets by Frank Warren. Warren placed an ad for people who found the ad hidden in different locations to send a postcard to him with their secrets. A simple idea but a fantastically successful one. When you read other peoples secrets so openly it makes you think about what secrets we carry with us all the time and how these effect us daily.

The secrets range from laughable confessions to indescribable desire and love to painful truths. Every emotion is presented in just a few simple words which makes you as a reader feel them as you reflect on your own experiences in life.

This work reminds me of a website that i found out about when i found the book. (i stupidly didn't buy the book and have regretted it ever since..i will find it and own it.)

This website documents thousands of photos of what people have drawn or written on walls around the world. There are thousands of photos so if you have a lot of time on your hands have a cup of tea or coffee and trawl though the wonder of human creativeness.

I love this sort of art that makes us humans look more closely at our condition. We live by rules and regulations but we all have a side that likes to break from the everyday norm in order to be normal. Everything we do comes down to us all being the same.
